The Japanese Nobility
THE JAPANESE TITLED NOBILITY: A ROLL OF JAPANESE NOBLE FAMILIES FROM 1880 to 1947.
The new and modern Japanese nobility was created in 1869, creating 2 classes:
- The Kazoku: merging the Daimyo (Feudal Lords) and Kuge (Nobility comprised of Courtiers and High Civil Servants)
- The Shizoku: formerly they were called Samurai (military nobility, similar in some ways to the European concept of nobility of the Sword).
- Right to award Titles of Nobility by the Japanese Emperor:
- The 1889 Japanese Constitution, article 15, gave the Emperor the right to award and confer titles of nobility:
- Princes (koshaku), awarded to 1° collateral branches of the Imperial Family (see above), 2° the 5 sekke (the 5 FUJIWARA Noble Houses who ruled Japan as Shogun): ICHIJO, KONOE, KUJO, NIJO and TAKATSUKASA, 3° the most prominent members of the Shogunal TOKUGAWA House, 4° the former Imperial House of KOREA: RI (or LEE or YI), 5° individuals who merited from the State, whatever their previous status: ITO, MOORI (MORI), SANJO, SHIMAZU, TOKUDAIJI, YAMAGATA.
- Marquess (Koshaku), awarded to 1° minor non-heir branches of the Imperial Family: TSUKUBA, YAMASHINA, 2° the primary branches (Sanke) of the TOKUGAWA House, 3° the families who enjoyed the status of Chancellor (Daijodaijin) in the State Council (Daijokan): NAKAYAMA, 4° the daimyo (domain lords) with the largest rice revenues: HOSOKAWA, IKEDA, MAEDA, YAMAUCHI , 5° the former Royal House of RYU KYU: SHO, 6° prominent individuals, whatever their previous status: DATE, KIDO, OKUBO, SAIGO, SHIJO
- Count (Hakushaku), awarded to 1° minor non-heir branches of the Imperial Family: KASHIMA, KATSURAGI, YAMASHINA, 2° secondary branches (sankyo) of the TOKUGAWA and FUJIWARA Houses: REIZEI (Fujiwara), 3° the families who enjoyed the status of Senior Councellor (dainagon) in the State Council (daijokan), 4° the daimyo (domain lords) with important rice revenues: MATSUDAIRA, NANBU, (NAMBU?), OGASAWARA, OMURA, SAKAI, SHIMAZU, TODA, 5° prominent individuals, whatever their previous status: DATE, ITO, YANAGIWARA
- Viscount (Shishaku), awarded to 1° the other kuge (Court nobles), 2° to the daimyo (domain lords) with the smallest rice revenues
- Baron (Danshaku)
By the year 1930, the total peerage and nobility of Imperial Japan was comprised of 961 peers: 18 Princes without Imperial Rank, 1 Duke, 41 marquises, 109 counts, 380 viscounts, and 412 Barons.
The Japanese Nobility was abolished by the New Constitution of Japan of the 3rd of November of 1946, specifically in the article 14, 2) which explained that "peers and peerages shall not be recognised", and article 14, 3) which affirms that "no privilege shall accompany any award of honour, decoration or any distinction, nor shall any such award be valid beyond the lifetime of the individual who now holds or hereafter may receive it." The Constitution produced legally valid effects from the 3rd of May of 1947 onwards.
As a result, the current nobility is composed of an historical nobility comprised of the descendants of the formerly titled nobility.
OFFICIAL ROLL OF JAPANESE NOBILITY AND NOBLE TITLES BEFORE THE 1946 ABOLITION: WHO IS WHO OF THE FORMER AND ANCIENT NOBILITY OF JAPAN
In this roll, the members of the nobility that are mentioned will include members of the Japanese and Korean Imperial Families, as well as Members of the Imperial Family of Manchukuo (a former Puppet Japanese State in northeast China).

The Japanese Feudal Nobility (Daimyos) and the Military or Sword Nobility (Samurais) shall be part of this list too.
The new nobility created by the Emperors.
We ask our readers to be patient and understanding. This compilation is quite complete and is very helpful, but it is not exhaustive, and it is product of our personal research as scholars and researchers of nobility in history.
